Upper Mustang is a mystery by all means. It was a separate kingdom till 1950 and was ruled by the king. But now, this region is accessible (from 1992) and can be trekked by acquiring special permission from the concerned. As part remained isolated, the Tibetan culture is unspoilt, adding more to the trekking experience.
Upper Mustang Trekking
This hidden area lies in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri massif. Thus, creating arid land and massif land of different colours is a soul-satisfying sight. Furthermore, barley fields and the flickering sound of coloured prayer flags are alluring. Once you reach Lo Manthang, a different world is waiting for you. Long walls of astonishing prayer wheels, narrow alleyways, hidden chortens, and equally appealing herds of farming animals promise to make this trek a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The presence of Lo Manthang royal palace, monasteries like Thugchen Gompa(15th Century), and Amchi Museum make this region rich artificially too. Mustang lies in the rain shadow, north of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, which makes the area even accessible in Monsoon. This region is fantastic with the presence of wind-eroded hills, red cliffs, and snow-capped mountains in the background.
